Computer repair technicians use various tools, such as power and cable testers and screwdrivers, to install and repair hardware and software on desktop computers. While some work at computer repair shops that target consumers, others specialize in commercial accounts, connecting employees to networks and repairing mainframes, laptops, keyboards and computer terminals. Computer repair technicians earn hourly wages averaging more than $18.

Wages by Industry

A computer repair technician can earn more in certain industries. In 2012, these technicians earned the highest hourly wages of $27.13 working for trade and technical schools, according to the BLS. They also earned relatively high wages in the scientific research and development and commercial and industrial machinery rental industries -- $24.85 and $21.38 per hour, respectively. Computer repair technicians employed by office supply, stationery and gift stores earned closer to average wages at $17.93, while those at electronics and appliance stores made $16.44.
